# How to Connect Slack to Accounting Intelligence

> Connect Slack to Accounting Intelligence to search messages, find channels and people, and post approved messages as yourself from a DualEntry chat.

The Slack connector lets Accounting Intelligence, DualEntry's AI assistant, read and post in your Slack workspace while you work in a DualEntry chat. It appears in Slack as the **DualEntry** app. You use it from Accounting Intelligence, not from inside Slack: there are no slash commands, bot mentions, or Slack-side screens to learn.

Use this page to see what the connector can do, install it, connect your own Slack account, and control when it is allowed to post. For connectors in general, see [How to Connect an MCP Connector](https://docs.dualentry.com/accountants/ai-automation/accounting-intelligence/connect-an-mcp-connector.md).

## Before you start

Setting up the Slack connector involves a DualEntry admin, every user who wants to use it, and sometimes a Slack workspace admin. Check which of these applies to you before you begin:

* **To install the connector** for your DualEntry organization, you need a DualEntry role that can create, edit, and archive integrations. See [User Roles and Permissions Reference](https://docs.dualentry.com/accountants/platform-configuration/user-roles-and-permissions.md).
* **To connect your own Slack account**, you need no special DualEntry role, but the connector must already be installed for your organization.
* **To authorize the app in Slack**, you need a Slack account in the workspace you want to use. If your workspace only allows approved apps, a Slack workspace admin has to approve the **DualEntry** app before anyone can connect.

You don't need to create a Slack app, register a client, or enter credentials. DualEntry provides the Slack app, and Slack's own authorization screen handles each user's sign-in.

Decide up front how much you want Accounting Intelligence to post without asking. Sending starts at **Needs approval** for every user, and each person can change that for themselves later.

## What the Slack connector does

The Slack connector gives Accounting Intelligence a set of tools it can call during a conversation in DualEntry. Every tool acts with the Slack access of the person who connected, so it sees only the channels, direct messages, and people that person can already see in Slack.

With the connector connected, Accounting Intelligence can:

* **List channels** and resolve a name such as `#month-end-close` to the channel it refers to
* **Find people** in your workspace by name or email, so a message can mention them
* **Search and read messages** in channels and conversations you have access to, for example to find the thread where a vendor confirmed an invoice amount
* **Send messages** to a channel, a thread, or a person, after you approve each one
* **Take other Slack actions you ask for**, such as reading a thread, creating a channel, adding a reaction, or opening a shared file

A typical request is "Post the March close status to #finance-close and tag Priya." Accounting Intelligence finds the channel, finds Priya's Slack user, drafts the message, and shows it to you for approval before anything reaches Slack.

Messages are posted as you, not as a bot. They show your name and avatar, and each one carries a small footer saying it was sent using DualEntry, so colleagues can tell it came from Accounting Intelligence. To post in a public channel you are not yet a member of, the connector joins that channel on your behalf first.

Nothing the connector reads from Slack is written to your ledger. Slack content is context for the conversation you are having; it never becomes a transaction unless you create one yourself.

## How the connector works with Slack

The Slack connector has two layers, an organization install and a personal connection, and it does nothing for you until both are in place.

An admin in DualEntry installs the connector once for the organization. The install points DualEntry at Slack's hosted MCP server (the Model Context Protocol server Slack runs for AI tools) and uses DualEntry's own Slack app, so your organization does not need to create its own Slack app.

Each person then connects their own Slack account through Slack's standard authorization screen, where Slack lists the permissions the DualEntry app requests. DualEntry stores the resulting token against that person's user record only. Your token is never shared with colleagues, and a colleague who has not connected cannot use Slack through Accounting Intelligence, even though the connector is installed.

Outside scheduled agents you set up, Accounting Intelligence calls Slack only while you are in a conversation and only when your request needs it. It does not monitor channels or listen for events. A scheduled agent can read Slack during its run, but it never posts without approval.

Every tool call is recorded in DualEntry with the tool name, who ran it, whether it succeeded, and how long it took. Message text and other argument values are deliberately not recorded in that log.

## Install the Slack connector

Installing the Slack connector makes it available to everyone in your DualEntry organization. You need a DualEntry role that can create, edit, and archive integrations, as described in [Before you start](#before-you-start).

1. In DualEntry, open **Accounting Intelligence** and go to **Connectors**.
2. Choose the **Marketplace** tab and search for **Slack**.
3. Choose **Install** on the Slack card.
4. Complete Slack's authorization screen for your own account.
5. Return to the **Installed** tab and confirm **Slack** appears there.

If your Slack workspace only allows approved apps, a Slack workspace admin has to approve the **DualEntry** app before anyone can finish step 4. Slack shows a request-to-install prompt in that case.

After these steps, the Slack connector is installed for your organization and connected for you. Colleagues still need to connect their own accounts.

## Connect your Slack account

Connecting your own Slack account is what lets Accounting Intelligence use Slack for you. Any DualEntry user can do it once the connector is installed, and no special DualEntry role is needed.

1. In DualEntry, open **Accounting Intelligence** and go to **Connectors**.
2. Find **Slack** under **Installed** and choose **Connect**.
3. On Slack's authorization screen, confirm the workspace is the one you want.
4. Review the permissions the **DualEntry** app requests.
5. Allow access.
6. Back in DualEntry, open an Accounting Intelligence chat and ask "What can you do in Slack?" to confirm the tools are available.

After you connect, Accounting Intelligence can search Slack and list channels and people for you straight away. Sending a message still asks for your approval each time, as described in the next section.

## Approve messages before they post

Every Slack message Accounting Intelligence writes waits for your approval by default. Reading tools run without asking; any tool that posts to Slack or otherwise changes something there, such as creating a channel, is set to **Needs approval** when you connect.

When Accounting Intelligence is ready to send, it pauses the conversation and shows an approval card with the destination channel or person and the full message text. Choose one of the following:

* **Approve Once** posts this message and asks again next time.
* **Always Approve** posts this message and lets Accounting Intelligence send Slack messages without asking in all your future chats.
* **Reject** cancels the message. Nothing is posted.

You can change these settings at any time. Open **Connectors**, select **Slack**, and set each tool under **Interactive Tools** to **Always allow**, **Needs approval**, or **Blocked**. Your choices apply only to you. An admin can block a tool for the whole organization, and that block overrides every user's setting.

[Scheduled agents](https://docs.dualentry.com/accountants/ai-automation/accounting-intelligence/scheduled-agents.md) run without anyone watching, so they never post to Slack unapproved: an unattended run treats every Slack write as needing approval, whatever your own setting is.

## Disconnect or remove the Slack connector

You can disconnect your own Slack account at any time, and an admin can remove the connector for the whole organization.

* **Disconnect your account**: in **Connectors**, select **Slack** and choose **Disconnect**. DualEntry revokes your Slack token and deletes it. Your colleagues' connections are not affected.
* **Remove the connector for everyone**: an admin opens **Connectors**, selects **Slack**, and chooses **Remove**. This disconnects every user in the organization and deletes the install.
* **Revoke from Slack**: you can also remove the **DualEntry** app from your Slack account or workspace in Slack's app management settings. Accounting Intelligence then loses access, and **Slack** shows as needing to reconnect in DualEntry.

Messages already posted to Slack stay in Slack after you disconnect. Delete them in Slack if you need them gone.

## AI accuracy

Accounting Intelligence uses AI to search Slack, summarize what it finds, and draft messages, and AI can produce inaccurate or incomplete output.

A search can miss a relevant message, a summary can misstate what someone said, and a draft can contain a wrong figure, the wrong channel, or the wrong person. Read every message on the approval card before you choose **Approve Once** or **Always Approve**, and check any number or decision against the source record in DualEntry before you act on it. Choosing **Always Approve** removes that review step, so reserve it for low-risk messages.

## Privacy and data handling

The Slack connector handles your Slack data under DualEntry's [Privacy Policy](https://www.dualentry.com/legal/privacy-policy).

DualEntry stores the Slack token you grant when you connect, against your own user record, and uses it only to make the Slack calls your conversations and your scheduled agents request. Slack messages Accounting Intelligence reads are used to answer the request that needed them. The DualEntry tool-call log records which tool ran and when, but not message text or other arguments.

The connector can only reach what your Slack account can already reach. It cannot read channels or direct messages you are not part of.

## Troubleshooting

Most Slack connector problems come from a missing personal connection or a Slack workspace setting. The table below maps what you see to what to do.

| What you see | What to do |
| - | - |
| Accounting Intelligence says it has no Slack tools | You have not connected your own account, or your connection expired. Choose **Connect** or **Reconnect** on **Slack** in **Connectors**. |
| Slack asks you to request approval to install the app | Your Slack workspace restricts apps. Ask a Slack workspace admin to approve the **DualEntry** app. |
| A colleague can use Slack and you cannot | Credentials are personal. Connect your own Slack account. |
| Accounting Intelligence cannot find a channel | The channel is private and you are not a member, or it is archived. Join the channel in Slack, or ask for the channel by its exact name. |
| A message never posted | It is still waiting on the approval card, it was rejected, or the tool is set to **Blocked**. Check the tool's setting under **Interactive Tools**. |
| Slack worked yesterday and fails today | Your Slack token was revoked or the app was removed in Slack. Reconnect from **Connectors**. |

## Get help

For help with the Slack connector, email DualEntry support at [ask@dualentry.com](mailto:ask@dualentry.com). You don't need a DualEntry account to email support, and DualEntry support replies within two business days.

Include your Slack workspace name, what you asked Accounting Intelligence to do, and roughly when it happened, so the team can find the request in the tool-call log.
